Citronella Training Collars - General InformationUpdated 2 years ago
Citronella 101
- Citronella collars use a very light misting spray that uses a combination of sensation and smell to dissuade the dog wearing the collar from barking.
- Recommend as the entry level for automated bark prevention training and 'precious' pets (4kg+)
- x1 Spray Refill contains approximately 200 sprays
- This doesn't work for every dog
- Citronella is a lemon-like citrus-like scent that dogs dislike. It doesn't smell good to dogs, but it's non-toxic and should not cause any skin irritation for the dog or their human.
There are three primary kinds of citronella training collars we offer; battery-based, rechargeable and battery-based with remote (No current remote-based offering, pending new product to replace)

Troubleshooting
Many common issues can be resolved by resetting the device by turning it off and repositioning the battery. Follow this guide to instruct a customer on setting up the device while being mindful of the fault discussed. Faults that cannot be fixed with troubleshooting include leaking from anywhere and not powering on. These can be confirmed via video or phone conversation after following the quick troubleshooting guide below.
- Turn the device switch to OFF and remove the battery.
- Insert a 6V 4LR44 battery between the two metal contact points, ensuring the + and - are the correct way and the ends of the battery are making good contact with the prongs. Secure the battery with the included battery lid.
- Use a citronella refill canister to fill the device for 8-10 seconds to ensure sufficient spray for testing.
(Usually 20-25 seconds for a full refill)- Confirm if the device sprays, leaks or shoots spray while filling.
If it does, the device is faulty. Confirm replacement or refund.
- Confirm if the device sprays, leaks or shoots spray while filling.
- Keeping your face clear of the valve on top, turn the device switch to ON.
- This should produce a spray from the device. Continue to next step even if not to confirm.
- This should produce a spray from the device. Continue to next step even if not to confirm.
- To test the device sensors, blow heavily or *woof* into the sensor on the inner side of the device - the inner side is the non-branded black side with small perforated holes in the middle that indicate where the sensors are. When you do this on the sensor, the device will trigger as if it was your dog barking.
- If not, repeat Step 1-2. If still not spraying with ON/OFF or testing, the device is faulty.
Confirm replacement or refund.
- If not, repeat Step 1-2. If still not spraying with ON/OFF or testing, the device is faulty.
- Ensure the strap is looped around the exterior, branded side of the device rather than the shorter way across the inner sensor, before putting the device on the dog as this can prevent both sensors from working.
(Adjust the training collar receiver to a 45° angle on the dogs neck for best vibration-to-muscle sensor contact) - The device has been tested and is now positioned on the dog ready to go!
The next time they start barking, look and listen out for the results.

- When the device beeps and sprays, it only leaks slightly
Troubleshooting
The rechargeable citronella collar seems to be a wholly more reliable device than the battery-based model, however it has two primary issues: customer confusion about device setup (specifically test and normal mode) and issues with the spray gauge / valve. The rechargeable citronella collar (BT-600) has two modes, test mode and normal mode:
- The test mode enables only the sound sensor, which will produce a *beep* sound and shoot out citronella spray when the sensor is heavily blown or woofed into.
- The normal mode enables both the vibration and audio sensors, detecting the muscle vibration and sound of barking before triggering the spray.
Use the following guide to test the device while covering and confirming potential device faults.
- Connect the device to the charger and confirm if LED lights come up when connected. A red light indicates the device is charging, a green light indicates the battery is full. Allow the device to charge for a minute before proceeding.
- If the LED light does not appear, try another USB cable.
If it still does not appear, the device is faulty. Confirm replacement or refund.

- Confirm if the device sprays, leaks or shoots spray while filling.
- While the device is on charge, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds. This will cause the LED light on the top of the product to flash between green and red, indicating the device is now in test mode.
- To test the device sensor, blow heavily or bark into the small circular protrusion on the inner side of the training collar - this is the slightly concaved side with no branding. When activated, the device will beep and produce a brief misting of citronella. If the device does not, adjust the angle of blowing or barking into the sensor.
- If the device does not beep and spray, repeat Step 1,3 & 4.
If still not operating, the device is faulty. Confirm replacement or refund.
- If the device does not beep and spray, repeat Step 1,3 & 4.
- After confirming the device works in test mode, press the power button to turn off the device and remove it from the charger. Press the power button to turn on normal mode, indicated by a green light that flashes every few seconds.
- Ensure the strap is looped around the exterior, branded side of the device rather than the shorter way across the inner sensor before putting the device on your dog as this can prevent both sensors from working.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- How does the Citronella Collar work?
A Citronella Bark Collar is one of the most effective methods available to help moderate your dog's excessive barking. The Rechargeable Citronella Collar has a sensor to detect vibrations from your dog’s vocal cords and the sound of their barking. In response, a light mist of a non-toxic citronella blend is sprayed towards your dog's muzzle.
The spray distracts your dog from barking and allows you to reinforce calm, quiet behaviour instead. Your dog will come to associate the citronella scent with their excessive barking. - I got sprayed with the citronella, what do I do?
Citronella spray is non-toxic to dogs and their humans, if you make contact with the spray you can wash it off with water. If for some reason irritation persists, we would recommend seeing your GP. - What if the collar continuously sprays after being refilled?
There may be an issue with the devices power system, refer to our customer service teams troubleshooting guide to fix the issue or confirm the fault. - Can I buy a new collar and pair it to my existing remote?
Our citronella training collars do not have interchangeable remotes and receivers, both units should be replaced.
Note: This product has been discontinued, a replacement product is being developed. - How long does the citronella collar battery last?

Here are some troubleshooting steps that have worked for us, so give them a go and if your product still isn’t working we’ll go from there:
- Attempt to reset the unit: turn off the device and remove the battery, attempting to refill the collar and noting if there is slight pressurised sound confirming the spray going in. Please note if the device sprays, leaks or shoots spray (or for longer than 2-3 seconds) while refilling. Then reinsert the battery and turning the device on - if it's sprays now then you're good to go.
- If it sprays when you turn it off and on but not when your doggo is barking, ensure the strap has been threaded over the external, longer way around the branded side of the device. The inner side of the collar has a sensor with no branding, this is the side that needs to go against the doggo so the sensor can detect barking.
- If experiencing no power at all:
1. Check the battery placement in the top of the unit, taking it out and putting it back in - ensure the battery is touching the contact points as these can sometimes bend awkwardly and need minor readjustment.
2. You can purchase additional batteries through our website here: [ https://tinyurl.com/edogbatteries ] They are a 6V 4LR44 battery, for your reference.
